Must have books For moms and kids! :)

With times having changed so much over the years since I was young raising kids is a whole new adventure these days. I was outside all the time, ran around the neighbor hood and played constantly. T.V. was never on my mind and I didn’t know what a computer was until the 6th grade. Those were the good old days. Now kids are constantly hooked up to electronics, television and all kinds of non outside non healthy stimulating products. I vowed that I would not let my kids be “Plugged in”, and they would be outside as much as possible stimulating as much of the creativity in their young minds as they could handle.

I have just invested in the best books ever for myself and my kids. I have a tween boy 11yrs and a soon to be tween girl at 8yrs. I didn’t know this phrase “tween” as I was growing up I was either a kid or a teenager, so I was interested in what these books had to say. Now as a female I don’t speak “boy” and they are totally different animals to me. I was eager to find out how to be able to talk to my boy better and know how to raise him as a strong young man who treat all those around him and himself, especially women, with the up most respect and kindness. What is good for him? How does he learn? What does he need at this young age? Well Mom’s here is the next book you should pick up. “Six ways to Keep the “Good” in your Boy” I am loving this book. It confirmed many things and opened many doors of understanding for me. I am half way done and loving every page.

The second book I found was “How to Keep the “Little” in your Girl”. Growing up with a mom who worked really hard for us to make ends meet, bless her heart, my sister and I spent a lot of time learning on our own. I wanted to get this book so I could fill in the blanks of what I lacked growing up, and to understand more about her little beautiful brain and what she needs to be a strong independent loving kind young woman. I will start it as soon as I am done with the other. I am so happy to have stumbled upon these books! Whether mom and dad are still home or if you are a single mom like me, these books are must have!

It is my nephews birthday soon and he asked for some survival books, so naturally I went to Amazon and found these books I have been wanting to get for the longest time.

“The Dangerous Book for Boys” by Gonn Iggulden,

“Boys Book of Survival, How to Survive Anything, Anywhere” by Guy Campbell

“For Boys Only, The Biggest Baddest book ever” by Marc Aronson and HP Newquist.

I also got my daughter “The Dangerous Book for Girls”,  and “For Girls Only, Everything great about being a girl”, by Laura Dower

We opened them last night and all I have to say is WOW! I wish I had these books when I was little. The girls one is full of hand clap games, tag games, and so much more! The boy’s book has all the cool tips like how to catch a fish with bare hands, the best paper airplanes, and so much more. Everything from the periodic table to flags, to cool phrases in other languages. If you have a boy or a girl or just want a fun read for yourself I definitely recommend getting these books! They couldn’t put the books down last night! 🙂

I found all the books on Amazon for decent prices. I am very happy with all of them and feel it is a great way to keep them creatively thinking and grounded to the real world of nature and adventure.

Happy reading and have fun getting closer to your little one with these books.

Winter is upon are the Germs

It seems to be that time of year is approaching us quickly.  The leaves are making their final plunge to the ground finalizing fall.

While Jack Frost is nipping at our windows, dreaded germs are enjoy spreading their love to all.

Some of the ways we try to keep the germs out of our house? Loads of Vitamin C, Multi-Vitamin daily, Echinacea & Golden Seal supplement, and never go outside with wet hair or without a coat. 🙂 Eating healthy and staying away from too many sweets. As you read in my previous post about Sugar Consumption. It is not in our best “Cold Fighting” interest to ingest so many sweets. All in moderation is our motto.

I recently read an article that stated 10 foods that had more sugar in them than Coke. They were the following:

Milk :  A single 8-ounce serving of plain old 1% milk contains 12 grams of sugar. That’s 3 teaspoons hiding in a very unexpected place.

Cereal: Most cereal even if said to have whole grains include brown sugar, sugar, high-fructose corn syrup and honey, making it 27% sugar.

Yogurt: A 6-ounce pineapple, peach and blueberry flavored yogurt cups contain 18, 19 and 20 grams of sugar. Even a fat-free brands have  35 grams of sugar.

Granola:  An 8-ounce cup can contain as much as 30 grams of sugar and granola bars.

Fruit Juice:  Apple juice has a whopping 10 teaspoons of sugar in just 12 ounces.

Energy Bars:  Have about 19 to 24 grams of sugar or 6 teaspoons.

Packaged Fruit:  (Fresh Fruit is your best option!) Motts apple sauce has 23 grams of sugar in a small serving cup, and just 1/3 cup of Ocean Spray’s Craisins dried cranberries contains 29 grams.

Oatmeal:  (Plain oatmeal is good for you!) However, McDonald’s oatmeal cup, ostensibly made up of just oats, milk, brown sugar and fruit, actually has 11 ingredients and more sugar than a Snickers bar at 32 grams.

Smoothies: (Homemade Smoothies are the best route to take) Considering, a 16-ounce Dunkin Donuts strawberry banana smoothie has 69 grams of sugar and the same size Jamba Juice Sunrise Banana Berry smoothie contains 59 grams.

Pasta Sauce:  9 grams of sugar in Classico’s Sweet Basil sauce or the 11 grams in Ragu’s Sundried Tomato and Sweet Basil.

Rice Cakes: Quaker’s Vanilla Creme Brulee mini rice snack cakes pack 8 grams into a serving.

Now I was pretty surprised to see these results as well. Granted there are some sugars we can’t avoid eating. What we can do is make sure we have healthy immune systems, and wash hands regularly keeping fingers out of eyes and mouths when in public. Our eyes, believe it or not, are a gateway to germs infecting our bodies.

I have become a label reader more than I used to be. I check to see if products are made in the USA and how much man-made sugar they contain. Dont get me wrong I love treats as much as the next. But I would prefer if not all my food was loaded with sugar.

So next time you pick up your favorite canned or jarred food flip it over and take a peek at whats inside. You may find yourself switching to another brand that may have less sugar. I know I do 🙂

Happy Healthy Eating!

I welcome your feedback and any results you may have found yourself.

My favorite Market places!

Lets just say… “I love Local Markets!!”

We have a little market shop downtown Coeur d Alene called “Pilgrim’s Market” that has a little bit of everything “Natural”. It has to be on of my favorite places to shop for all my homeopathic remedies and organic cravings. Their website is still under a little construction but if you are in the area or want to check it out I highly recommend it!

It has my favorite Homemade Soaps, Raw Cocao Nibs for homemade chocolate, tasty fresh snacks, and a wide selection of hand crafted beers and wines. The produce is incredible and the selection is amazing. Here you will find all the supplements one could desire for all homeopathic needs.

Whenever my boyfriend and I get the time, we like to roam around Pilgrim’s and see what new things they have to offer. They have expanded over the past few years and are now a booming Market full of bulk foods, health and beauty products, groceries, even meat and sea foods!

If you are in need of natural ingredients, healthy treats, luxurious soaps, and live near Coeur d Alene then I encourage you to stop by Pilgrim’s and see all they have to offer!

Another awesome experience in our area is the Farmers Market.

It is a fantastic place set up for locals to come and share their produce, creations, talents, and so much more! There is something interesting at each booth. Me and the kids love touring around the Market and getting goodies. There is so much diversity in the crafts that you will definitely find something you like. Check out the website to see what music will be playing! They are there rain or shine. I look forward to checking it out this summer.

It’s your turn! What are the cool things your community offers that you enjoy over the relaxing summer days? I would love to see what you all do in your neck of the woods. Each town has its own culture, and its own creative experiences to offer. I learning about whats out there, and maybe add it to a road trip itinerary.

So please share! I look forward to hearing from you and about your hometown. 🙂
